Understanding Ear Wax

Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural protective substance produced by the glands in the ear canal. Its job is to trap dust, debris and bacteria while keeping the skin inside the ear healthy. In some people, wax can build up more quickly than it moves out, leading to blockage.  This may happen due to narrow ear canals, hearing aids, earphones, excessive production, age related changes or simply genetics. When wax becomes compacted, it may cause reduced hearing, pressure, discomfort, tinnitus, dizziness or a sensation of fullness in the ear.
Microsuction is the safest, cleanest and most effective way to removal ear wax. The process uses a gentle medical suction device to lift the wax from the ear canal without water, making it suitable even for sensitive ears. It is quick, typically lasting only a few minutes, and allows the clinician to see the ear canal clearly throughout the procedure for maximum safety and efficiency.

Preparing for Your Appointment

To achieve the best results from your ear wax removal procedure, please follow these simple steps:

  • Use olive oil ear drops twice a day in the affected ear(s) for several days before your appointment to soften the wax.

  • Do not use cotton buds, tissue twists, or any objects inside the ear canal.

  • Avoid inserting earbuds, earplugs, or hearing aids for several hours before your appointment if possible.

  • Keep the ear dry- avoid water irrigation at home or DIY methods.

  • Let us know if you have perforated eardrum, recent infection, ear surgery or any concerns prior to your appointment.

  • Arrive on time so we can carry out a full ear health check before treatment.

  • If a second visit is required to complete the removal, your follow-up appointment  is free of charge.
